Rice Collaborative Research Center

This research center represents the new trend of synergy between private enterprise and academic research and is intended to provide a new meeting and gathering space for that purpose. The traditional Rice materials of local brick, Texas limestone, and Southern Live Oaks are recombined to create a modern entry cloister atop a parking deck. The resulting landscape has been designed for maximum absorbency of rainfall, helping to reduce local storm surges. The key feature of the project is a proposed 150-foot long glowing “Rain Bench”, producing Houston-style deluges of chilled laboratory gray water on a programmed basis inside a perforated stainless steel enclosure.
