Berkeley Commons / Aquatic Park

Berkeley Commons is a major life science development occupying two blocks in the city of Berkeley. It sits at a highly visible location facing Aquatic Park and highlights the University Avenue entry to Berkeley from Interstate 80. A key mission of the project is improving the condition of currently compromised tidal lagoon and providing more publicly accessible open at a place where the public park is highly constrained. This was achieved by pulling development well back from Bolivar St., creating space for a winding promenade for the cultivation of the coastal native plants that once existed along this former edge of San Francisco Bay. The project also includes extensive new tidal marshes for habitat growth and improving lagoon water quality, as well as an Ohlone medicinal garden and prayer deck facing the Golden Gate. Private development is notoriously difficult in Berkeley but this project enjoys broad support thanks to what the landscape design provides. As of October 2021, construction is now underway, scheduled to complete in 2023.
