ULI/Gerald D Hines Student Urban Design Competition

This year’s 20th annual student urban design competition was a redevelopment plan for an Oakland, California site. The competition asked students for proposals to create a vibrant mixed-use, mixed-income area next to I-880 in downtown Oakland. The challenge brief asked the students to address equity, housing affordability, access to neighborhood services, sustainability, and connectivity to surrounding communities.

There were 93 entries and a jury of 15 leading ULI members selected the four teams that advanced to the final round of the competition. Tom Leader was a member of the jury for this year’s competition. The winning team’s proposal was titled “The Stack” and was comprised of students from the University of Texas at Austin.
